"Mindfulness is paying attention , on purpose, to what is happening in the present moment, non-judgmentally."
Jon Kabat-Zinn
We can be mindful of what is going on our visual fields, in our sight; we can tune in to what is happening
auditorially, with our ears, recognizing sounds in the environment; we can attend to our physical beings,
with our sense of touch, becoming aware of textures, warmth, heat or pain. We can attend to smell and taste.
We can become mindful of what is happening internally as well, becoming aware of our emotions.
Mindfulness practice enables both adults and adolescents to sleep better at night, to cope more easily
in stressful situations, to deal with chronic pain, to experience higher levels of decision making
and an overall sense of ease and well being.
Studies show that children who practice mindfulness are better able to pay attention, participate and recall information, exhibit self-control, and show care and respect for others. Research also show that children who practice mindfulness develop resiliency for difficult situations and experience an overall feeling of being well-liked and appreciated.
